Deus Vult — “God wills it” — was the rallying cry that emerged during the First Crusade (1096–1099). It was first recorded at the Council of Clermont in 1095, when crowds responded to Pope Urban II’s call with a unified acclamation, expressing the belief that the undertaking was aligned with divine will.

Deus Vult reflected a medieval worldview in which history, duty, and action were understood as subject to God’s authority. It became a collective expression of submission to faith, obedience to calling, and unity of purpose among those who believed they were acting in service of Christendom.
